Less than 20 minutes drive away from Appleby, the route from Acorn Bank to Temple Sowerby is a peaceful, remote walk exploring woodland and riverside trails. After 1931 Express Dairy, handling milk eggs and manufacturing cheese, became major employer until it closed 1997. On the south side of the building, there’s a quatrefoil plaque inscribed with 1179, to commemorate Appleby’s first written charter, and above this is a pretty bellcote on the gable. In the mid-20th century, the story developed that the fair originated with a royal charter to the borough of Appleby from King James II of England in 1685. She died in Brougham Castle at the age of 86, living a particularly long life for a woman in the 17th century.
