About this deal

Indeed, Daniels portrays the whole “teenager suddenly finds herself with near-invincible superpowers” extremely … well, realistic is not the correct word—believably, I guess? We ask all users help us create a welcoming environment by reporting posts/comments that do not follow the subreddit rules.

I won’t give this book one star because I found the relationship between Danny and her parents interesting and, from the reviews I have seen from people who transitionned, it seems like good representations. For me, it was not that Dreadnought wasn’t perfect, but that its flaws were quite deep, impacting and needed to be highlighted. Additionally, Danny must now deal with the lingering eyes of certain men and boys, other forms of sexism, and the assumption that she now wants to start dating the boys at her school - which is incorrect because Danny is, in fact, gay.I did have some issues with some makes and feels, but the overall quality of writing, especially Danielle’s voice, her banter with Doc Impossible, and the action scenes far outweigh them. Dreadnought is one of the most famous superhero in the US and well, Danny didn’t expect him to die and pass all of his powers into her hands. It’s not often that trans people get to take center stage in literature, and it’s wonderful to see such a positive, optimistic trans girl get to be a superhero.

I get to my feet and peek around the wall, and there across the road, a black and red cloud is blooming from the top floors of an office tower. They’ve given me some good food-for-thought regarding the explanations behind Danny’s transformation, and some problematic ableist moments, but have also reaffirmed my conclusion that this is a kickass superhero novel with a fantastic sense of humour. For example, as an eight-year-old the future Kaiser, who had a withered left arm due to damage from forceps suffered at birth, was made to take riding lessons, and "[o]ver and over" per the supervising tutor, the "'weeping prince' was 'set on his horse, without stirrups and compelled to go through the paces. There's a little wall segment sticking out from the side of the mall, an architectural brain fart that serves no function I can see, but is perfect for giving me a little privacy in the heart of one of the largest, most densely-packed cities in the country. My major criticism is that it is too short, and that having read it so soon after its release I now have to wait far too long to read the sequel.
