The authors spent months compiling hundreds of fictional and imaginary places from film, television, literature, myths, comics, video games and much more, all of which were carefully plotted in a series of highly detailed, antique-style maps by Mike. The maps draw from the movies, TV, novels, video games and more, all painstakingly tracked down, mapped, annotated and wittily divulged by the authors.

I also developed a range of icons and symbols for features such as mountains, lakes, shipwrecks and even 'sky elevators'. The maps also pinpoint dozens of famous fictional organisations and businesses — Central Perk, Ghostbusters HQ, Torchwood, Cyberdyne Sytems, Sterling Cooper, Tyrell Corporation, to name just a few of the more famous examples. The 14 cities covered are Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York City, Paris, Rio, San Francisco, Sydney, Tokyo, Venice and Washington DC.

I was impressed that the authors found Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry — it’s reputed to be “unplottable” — along with the nearby town of Hogsmead, frequented by Harry Potter and his friends, tucked away in eastern Scotland’s Cairngorms Mountains. The atlas is sumptuously illustrated by Mike Hall, whose glorious maps and illustrations of London have long beguiled us.Each map began as a rough draft by Matt which included detailed instructions for locations of fictional islands, coastlines and other geographical features. A full index is included, so it's easy to look up your favourite films or novels and see how they're mapped. As a lifelong dinosaur fan, I was excited that the mythical Isla Nublar, home of the ill-fated Jurassic Park, was also mapped.
