About this deal

Who knew that seaweed was the vital ingredient missing from our lawns? The manufacturers at Maxicrop certainly didn’t let this information pass them by, and have found a way to harness seaweed’s potential in their Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic. It contains a wide variety of nutrients to kill off moss and improve lawn health, with the seaweed extract helping to stimulate grass regrowth and establish stronger roots. This was the best granular feed we tested. The quality of the turf improved significantly over the testing period and gave the grass a lovely deep-green colour. It needs to be applied every six weeks. When a selective weed killer has been applied a twisting effect of the leaves and distorted growth can be witnessed. However, it can take up to 6 weeks for the weed to die completely. This may sound odd but you’ll get the most effective results when you mix Fairy Liquid in the right proportion. And the right proportion is 60 ml of the dish soap into 4 and a ½ liters of water. After mixing the solution, you can fill a garden sprayer and apply it to the targeted areas.

If allowed to get out of control, moss can overrun your lawn. It often outcompetes grass and will steal valuable water and nutrients away. As a result, moss will spread, killing off your grass. It contains a much lower nitrogen content than many other moss killers/lawn feeds, which avoids an undesirable growth spurt for grass over winter. Instead, the root systems are fortified, resulting in stronger grass that is less likely to let moss overpower it. The seaweed extract is the ingredient that is responsible for promoting greener growth. It also has 2% nitrogen to supply the soil with that much-needed nutrient. Keep this product away from your pets and children because it may cause skin irritation when wet but once dried it is perfectly safe. Pros For example, some products suggest mowing the lawn right before application to make sure the product gets down to the soil while others recommend waiting a few days to make sure weeds are taken care of, too.

Now that you have decided on using either type of moss destroyer, let us look at how each one works and what are their pros and cons.

You’ve probably seen a spongy, moist layer of green leaves on the ground and on other surfaces if you’ve ever been to a lush green forest in the countryside. It appears almost like a greenish-velvet like carpet, which is what we call ‘moss.’ Moss is actually a tiny flowerless plant with leaflets that look like little flowers. Just as with any other plant, moss leaflets contain photochemical cells. They are available in a range of formulas that include organic ingredients to powerful iron sulphate. Application varies with liquid moss killers requiring a pump sprayer or watering can whereas others can be applied by hand. On top of this, the granulated formula contains iron which kills off moss, stopping it from taking over whilst the weather forces you to spend more time inside. It can be applied every six weeks, with this 20 kg bag containing enough product to cover an area of 571 m². Moss visibly shrinks within a few weeks, and weeds also retreat, leaving a lawn that often starts to look greener and clearer within seven days. Dead moss can then be raked up and disposed of. I recommend liquid-form moss killer if you’re worried about grass burn . Because the solution is diluted, there’s less danger of patchy application. Patchy application can lead to areas of product concentration (which ultimately burns grass!).If you’ve tried non-chemical optionsbut found they were unsuitable or not practical for you, then there are two types of chemical mosskiller you could consider. Take care to usethese in a minimal and specificallytargeted way.

The Proctors Lawn Feed Moss Killer achieves better coverage than other products sold in a similarly-sized container; this is because it is made up of ‘micro-granules’ that are more compact than standard granules. The product goes further, and these granules are also less likely to clog in a spreader than those of traditional size.

Best lawn moss and weed killer: Comparison Table

Mosskillercombined with fertiliser (nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, indicated by the abbreviations NPK) can be beneficial if the grass is growing poorly. Available products includeMiracle-Gro Evergreen Complete 4 in 1, Westland Aftercut All-in-One Feed, Weed and Moss killer, and Maxicrop Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic liquid concentrate (with seaweed extract) Using a moss killer will stop this spread, and the majority of them will actually fertilise your lawn and help improve its appearance.

If the idea of raking up dead moss, after already spending time laboriously spreading moss-killing granules, doesn’t fill you with joy, the Miracle-Gro EverGreen Moss Remover Lawn Food is the best moss killer for getting this job done fast. In fact, there’s generally very little raking required after treatment, thanks to its specially-designed formula. Liquid or soluble moss killers work faster than granular products but sometimes only kill the top layer of moss which is why careful raking is so important. If you’re after an effective product that won’t need to be applied too many times, the Westland Aftercut Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer works to eliminate moss and weeds whilst helping with grass growth. It only needs to be applied twice a year, once in the spring and once towards the end of summer, improving the appearance and health of the lawn without being too time consuming. For this reason, it’s the best lawn moss killer if you want a low-maintenance option. The Pro-Kleen Premium Iron Sulphate Lawn Tonic/Lawn Conditioner & Moss Killer is another option also used by professional landscapers to keep moss at bay and the grass green. As already mentioned, it’s actually the same product as Ferromel 20 Iron Sulphate PREMIUM Lawn Conditioner, Lawn Feed & Moss Killer, it’s just marketed in a fancy tub by a different brand which is why it’s my Runner-up.

Final Verdict

Therefore if you have a large area with mossy spots to treat, I suggest you plan and apply granular moss killer when weather conditions are favourable so you can get maximum results. If it rains after application, the chemical reaction will happen regardless of whether or not it’s sunny or cloudy. As such, I’d recommend raking your lawn before applying this product and then raking again a couple of weeks after application.
