You can also get probiotics in less concentrated quantities from fermented foods and drinks, including: Rekdal, V. M. et al. Discovery and inhibition of an interspecies gut bacterial pathway for Levodopa metabolism. Science 364, 1055 (2019). Just like other popular supplements and dietary fads, probiotics are having their fair share in the limelight, and shelves are being inundated with products that suggest they’re cure-alls for every ailment. If someone has disrupted their gut microbial balance, this is where a probiotic can be of benefit,” saysDr. Cresci. “But whether it’s really going to help and whether you’re taking the right one are the big questions out there.” The diversity and structure of fecal microbiota have not changed significantly during/after the course of intervention. A relatively high gut microbiota diversity is often considered a healthy physiological state, while a lower gut microbiota diversity is generally associated with unhealthy conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome 44 and mild cognitive impairment 45. However, a low stool consistency, which is common in patients with PD, has been reported to be associated with a relatively high species richness 46. Meanwhile, a previous 2-year trial investigated the gut microbiota of patients with PD and found no significant difference in the Shannon index and beta diversity between different time points 47, which is consistent with our results. Thus, probiotic-driven regulation of the gut microbiota did not seem to be obvious on the level of microbiota diversity and structure, but on key species responsible for a specific function in the gut. For example, Bifidobacterium have been considered as pathogens in patients with PD, as they were found to correlate with the pathology of PD 47. However, in our study, the relative abundance of B. animalis was found to increase significantly after probiotic intervention, accompanied by the remission of clinical symptoms, suggesting that an increase in B. animalis might mitigate PD-associated symptoms.

Holmqvist, S. et al. Direct evidence of Parkinson pathology spread from the gastrointestinal tract to the brain in rats. Acta Neuropathol. 128, 805–820 (2014). The gut microbiota of patients with PD was reported to have reduced carbohydrate fermentation and butyrate synthesis capacity and increased proteolytic fermentation compared with healthy individuals 6. Some taxa in the phylum Firmicutes, such as Butyricimonas and Clostridiam clusters IV and XIV, have been considered as protagonists of carbohydrate fermentation and butyrate production 48, 49. Our study found that some SGBs in Firmicutes ( Butyricimonas sp. CAG:1, Lachnospira eligens, Clostridiales sp. CAG:26, etc.) increased after probiotic intake. Moreover, SGBs involved in SCFAs (butyrate, isovaleric acid, and propionate) synthesis increased in the Probio-M8 group after intervention. Bacteroides were reported to be GABA-producers, and their relative abundance correlated negatively with the brain signatures associated with depression 15. Interestingly, our data showed that more GABA synthesis modules-encoding SGBs were identified in the probiotic group; and more Bacteroides intestinalis was found in the Probio-M8 group, which was associated with increased MMSE scores as well. Our data also showed that more SGBs representing Prevotella and Lactobacillus were found in the placebo group after the course of intervention. Prevotella were found to increase in patients with PD, and they played important roles in the metabolism of mucus layer glycoprotein, the permeability of the intestinal barrier, and inflammation 50, 51. Some Lactobacillus could produce specific enzymes that convert levodopa into dopamine before it reaches the brain, thus decreasing the drug efficacy and increasing the required dose for clinical effectiveness 13, 52. Our results showed that the abundance of L. fermentum in the placebo group was significantly associated with a less fit mental state (characterized by higher scores of HAMA and HAMD; lower scores of MMSE) and more serious illness (characterized by higher scores of UPDRS). In addition, some neuroinflammation-associated pathogens decreased after Probio-M8 intervention, such as P. distasonis, Evtepia gabavorous, and, K. oxytoca. The species, P. distasonis, correlated negatively with hippocampal function, while K. oxytoca could induce anxiety and colitis, and the population of apoptotic neuron cells in the brain of mice via production of lipopolysaccharide and enterotoxins 53, 54, 55. In our study, K. oxytoca was found to be significantly and negatively associated with feces hardness in patients with PD. Therefore, it was likely that the clinical remissive effect of Probio-M8 was related to the regulation of specific gut microbiota in patients with PD.

Probiotics are also fragile things. If they aren’t manufactured under controlled conditions, or tested strains aren’t used, or are sealed in cheap capsules, they may not be very effective (or at all). It’s also a bonus if they’ve run clinical trials, or have submitted their strains for third party testing. Our criteria for finding the best probiotics Browne, P. D. et al. Probiotics in pregnancy: protocol of a double-blind randomized controlled pilot trial for pregnant women with depression and anxiety (PIP pilot trial). Trials 20, 21 (2019). Many probiotics produce a byproduct called short-chain fatty acids in your gut. These byproducts have many benefits to your gut health, but a sudden influx of them could cause temporary diarrhea. Other probiotics produce gases in your gut as byproducts. If you suddenly have more of them than usual, you might notice increased bloating and gas during digestion. These symptoms should resolve within a few days. What’s the best way to take probiotics? Hill, C. et al. The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics consensus statement on the scope and appropriate use of the term probiotic. Nat. Rev. Gastroenterol. Hepatol. 11, 506–514 (2014). The UPDRS-III scores, reflecting the severity of PD were significantly reduced in the Probio-M8 group at 1 M and 3 M versus baseline ( P = 0.037, P = 0.016, respectively), while the scores only dropped at 3 M ( P = 0.037) but not earlier in the placebo group. Besides, the magnitudes of improvement in sleep quality, anxiety state, mental state (measured by MMSE), and depression (measured by HAMD-17) of patients were greater in the Probio-M8 group than in the placebo group (Fig. 1b). The probio-M8 group also showed significantly higher scores for the satisfaction of treatment and the possibility of continuing medication than the placebo group ( P< 0.001 in both cases, Fig. 1b).Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast found in probiotics. It appears to help fight diarrhea and other digestive problems. Here's what to look for when choosing the best probiotic for women and men.

Because these good bacteria already exist in the body, they’re considered safe for most people. But there are some things to consider. A module-based analytical framework described by Valles-Colomer 32 and MetaCyc metabolic database were used to predict SGBs encoding related GMMs. For each SGB, the predicted open reading frames (ORFs) were compared with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) Orthologies (KOs) database to annotate the key gut-brain metabolic modules. The SGBs encoding related modules were identified by Omixer-RPM using the parameter -c 0.66 87. Strandwitz, P. et al. GABA-modulating bacteria of the human gut microbiota. Nat. Nowadays, people are once again realising these valuable probiotic enzymes are central to healthy body and microbiome. Who should take probiotic supplements? These products are all available over the counter (OTC), in grocery stores, drug stores and health and wellness stores. They come as dietary supplements (capsules, liquids or powders) or as topical lotions or creams for different uses. Your healthcare provider can help you select a good one to try for your needs. You will know a probiotic is working by changes in your digestion and mood. Most people find digestion symptoms are alleviated the soonest. This can include easier and more regular bowel movements, or less tummy irritation. Other things to look out for are improved mood and sleep quality. Is it best to take probiotics morning or night? Among these are the potent strains L. rhamnosus, B. breve, and L. acidophilus. This has been complemented with 1 billion S. boulardii, a beneficial yeast strain, as well as 2 types of natural fibre. Fibre not only promotes gut health but also nourishes and encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. Many types of bacteria are classified as probiotics. They all have different benefits, but most come from two groups. Ask your doctor about which might best help you.
