If Only They Could Talk by James Herriot | Goodreads

One of the more subtle differences, which didn’t really fit into the table, is in the nuances of character of some of the main protagonists. I would say that all the main characters feel slightly warmer in the books than they do on TV. James is warmer and funnier than he’s written on the TV series, and Tristan is more competent and mature. Some of the disasters that almost always happen to Tristan in the TV series happen to other people, including James, in the books. The friendship between James and Tristan is something that just seems to happen very naturally in the book – Herriot doesn’t “gush” about how great a friend Tristan is or anything like that (it’s not a sentimental book) but they do seem to spend quite a bit of time together and get on well. This was one of the aspects that I didn’t think worked all that well in the series – it often feels to me as if Tristan is trying too hard with James and that James is rather disapproving of him. Helen also seems a good deal nicer, partly due to the fact that there is no Richard Edmundson sub-plot in the part of the books that I have read so far, so it doesn’t come across as if she is stringing both James and Richard along. I’m most of the way through the second book now, so I’m planning to do another comparison when I’ve finished that. I didn’t realise how many differences there were between the books and the TV series, especially with Helen not appearing in the book at all. Interesting process on how the production team adapted the books into the TV series, especially regarding the inclusion of Helen early on in the series. A first edition, first printing published by Michael Joseph in 1970. A very good+ book with one gift inscription in a near fine clipped wrapper. The rare first appearance of James Herriot and the inspiration for the popular BBC series featuring Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy. Life with Siegfried and Tristan. Description of Skeldale and of Boardman. James getting used to life in the Dales. What an endearing bunch of characters. It was a bedtime read, and I realised that every night I was looking forward to going to bed, just so I could read some more....

James Herriot realizes that the veterinarian job is not as easy as professionals show it on their books; the beautiful pictures of cows standing calm waiting for the doctor to attend them were a big lie. He was blaming doctors for not teaching how to look for instruments in the darkness and in small places with a lot of dust. In this chapter, James Herriot fights a battle against a calf that gives him a lot of problems at the time of its born.Arriving in the small Yorkshire village of Darrowby newly qualified veterinary surgeon, James Herriot has no idea what is in store for him. Having only been qualified for the last seven months, James knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was up to the challenge or so he believed. When I was a child, I used to be fascinated by distant and remote places. I loved the idea of travelling to different lands. Islands, in particular, used to appeal to me. Easter Island, in the South Pacific, was one of the places I wanted to visit. It was almost too small to see in my atlas and it’s 1,300 miles from any other land. How did people get there originally? Where did they come from? What did they eat and drink on the long journey across the sea? They must have been exceptional people. And, when you see the statues that these people built on Easter Island, these people seem even more amazing. Example. A teacher asks what i am reading. '1984' i reply, a classic, well known work, and one of George Orwell's greatest pieces. Instead, i vaguely describe of how James treats the Bellerbys’ cow and waits while they have Sunday lunch before giving them a lift into Darrowby to see Handel’s Messiah. And do I even read anymore? Yes I surely do, but I’m reading far too many books at once to even see progress. Of course that’s not why I read. Books like James Herriot’s (Alf Wight’s) are. These stories are touching and funny and kind and crazy. They remind me of my days as a veterinary technician. They remind me of times I’ve never knew. People I’ve seen, but haven’t met. Or people I’ve met, but never really known. I think just about anyone would enjoy these episodic adventures of a veterinary in the Yorkshire Dales.

It is Tristan rather than Siegfried who has the dog in his room overnight and doesn’t get a wink of sleep. In 1939, at the age of 23, he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In January 1940, he took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but moved in July to work in a rural practice based in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. The original practice is now a museum, "The World of James Herriot".Heart-breaking and hilarious in equal measure, If Only They Could Talk is the first volume of classic memoirs which chronicle James Herriot's first years as country vet in the 1930's. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles.
